Zhitomyr is situated 90 miles west of the capital of , Kiev. It is a historical city going back over 800 years. The city is a mixture of long-time city residents, who predominantly speak Russian, and newer residents who have moved in from the countryside, who speak Ukrainian for the most part.

How to Get to Zhitomyr Ukraine

While there are trains from Kiev to Zhitomyr, they are somewhat inconvenient. There is no direct rail line between Kiev and Zhitomyr, so the trains must connect via a third city, making the train trip longer than necessary. Most Ukrainians travel to Zhitomyr in marshrutnys. These mini-buses (or vans) leave from a number of places in Kiev. For the shortest trip, take the to the Zhytomyrska station (named after Zhitomyr). Marshrutnys leave from outside this station throughout the day, as they fill up with people (roughly every 15-30 minutes during the day.) The 90-minute ride costs 20 UAH ($4.00). The marshrutny does not make "pit stops," so be sure to use the restroom before you go. There is a rest room located on the second floor of the shopping center atop the station. It costs 1 UAH ($0.20) and is very clean.

You can also catch a marshrutny to Zhitomyr from the main bus station in Kiev. The closest station to the central bus station is Lybidska.

The marshrutnys described above will deposit you at the central bus station in downtown Zhitomyr. On the second floor of the Zhitomyr bus station, you will find an Internet cafe. Instead of being a dark cubby hole, this Internet cafe has wall to wall window looking out on the main street in Zhitomyr (Kievska street).

What to Eat in Zhitomyr Ukraine

On the second floor of the central bus station in Zhitomyr, there is a cafe. Here you can buy a meal to eat while waiting for your bus. Or buy some snacks (cold cuts of salami, cheese and bread, for example) to take along with you on a bus ride.
