The Hryvnya

The official currency of Ukraine is called the Hryvnya (pronounced "HREVE-nyuh" in Ukrainian and "GRIEVE-nyuh" in Russian. (Russian-speaking Ukrainians sometimes refer to these as "rubles," but their value is not the same as a Russian ruble.) The Hryvnya is divided into 100 Kopecks.

At the time of writing, one Hryvnya was worth about 20 US cents.

Exchanging Money in Ukraine

Dollars and other foreign currency are not accepted in the stores or markets in Ukraine. But there are currency exchange shops everywhere. (Often they are little more than a window in a wall.) To find one, just look for the typical sign out front, showing the various exchange rates (see photo).
