Lvov, Ukraine - Part 2

Lvov is located in the western, Ukrainian speaking part of Ukraine. Lvov is a much smaller city than Kiev, and has much of an old-city look to it. The streets surrounding the main squares are cobblestone. (You can even hire a horse-pulled cab to clop along them in.) The downtown streets are narrow and winding. There are many interesting and historical sights to see in Lvov.

Arriving in Lvov

If arriving by train at the Lvov train station, the #1 or #2 trams will take you from the train station to downtown. Te #6 tram will take you to the Hotel Lvov (described elsewhere on this site.)

If flying into the Lvov airport, there is a trolleybus stop right at the airport. It will take you downtown for 10 cents. Of course, there are also taxis available. They cost will depend on your bargaining skills. The real fare is somewhere around $7 for a ride to somewhere in town.

Getting Around in Lvov

Lvov has the usual (for Ukraine) mix of trams, trolleybuses, regular buses and marshrutnys. The marshrutnys (smaller sized buses or even vans that follow the same routes as the regular buses and trolleybuses) will cost you about 20 cents per ride. The others all cost a dime a ride. A taxi ride within town will cost you about $7 or less. To get to the airport, take a taxi for about $7. Or hop on the #9 trolleybus-- it goes directly to the airport.

Shopping in Lvov

For a US-style super market, head to the Arsen store. Ask someone for the marshrutny to get you there. It is a large supermarket with a wide variety of foods and some other items. They have a big cheese and fresh meat section. They even have fun "car-style" shopping carts for any little travelers accompanying you. Lvov is the largest city in western Ukraine. It has a true Ukrainian flavor, from the foods to the dress to the language. Unlike Kiev, where Russian and Ukrainian are both widely spoken, the Ukrainian language is used almost exclusively in Lvov.
