Lvov, Ukraine - Part 1Lvov is located in the western, Ukrainian speaking part of Ukraine. Lvov is a much smaller city than Kiev, and has much of an old-city look to it. The streets surrounding the main squares are cobblestone. (You can even hire a horse-pulled cab to clop along them in.) The downtown streets are narrow and winding. There are many interesting and historical sights to see in Lvov.Sights in LvovThe heart of downtown Lvov is a long square, decorated at night with thousands of lights hanging overhead. At one end of the square is the ornate Opera building.Eating in LvovOne of our favorite places to eat is in the chain called Puzata Khata. The food is served cafeteria style, so you can see what looks good before you order it. It is also means no waiting to prepare your meal.article continues below
Looking for something familiar to eat in Lvov? There's a McDonald's right downtown across from the central square. Enjoy your meal by their second floor windows and watch the heart of the city and all the people walking by you. For the economy minded, try a "pig in a blanket" from a street vendor. These are tasty hot dog wieners wrapped in breading. You can get a fried or a baked version for around 50 cents. Budget Hotels in LvovIf you aren't looking for first class (and maybe not even second class), you can find a bargain at the Hotel Lvov -- right in the heart of downtown across from the Opera. This is a very convenient location, as it is in the heart of downtown Lvov. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel, with marshrutnys going to every part of town. Taxis are also available just outside the front doors. And their is even an outdoor souvenir market located just across the street. A single room with bath, telephone and TV costs just 120 UAH per night ($25). (A "renovated" version of the same room runs you 170 UAH -- $35.) Or go really cheap and get a room with only a sink (Shared bathroom and shower located down the hall). That only costs 70 UAH ($15) a night. When we were there once, the water was temporarily turned off (due to repairs). However, the desk did warn us of this up front, before we checked in. Also, the elevators seemed to be permanently out of service.
