The expensive Western chain hotels do a pretty good job of advertising themselves. Here is one visitor's "find" in the budget hotel category.

Budget Hotels in Kiev Ukraine

For under $40 per night, you can stay in a tall rise hotel right next to the Dnieper River. For under $40 a night, at The Hotel Slavutich you get a small single, room that includes a bathroom (with shower), telephone and television. And unbelievable at this price, the lobby area has unlimited free Wi-Fi Internet access. The access is fast enough to clearly use Skype, which means almost-free international phone calls from Ukraine! This hotel was a real find. From the rooms on one side of the hotel (and from the lobby on each floor), you have a clear view of the Dnieper River. And across it, the gleaming golden domes of the famous and beautiful Pecherska Lavra Monastery. And the imposing figure of Mother Motherland -- the giant 200-foot tall statue at the War Memorial. Hotel is located at 1. Entuziastov street. Take the number 40 (among others) from the Livoberzhna subway station.

Attached to the ground floor of the hotel, but entered via a separate outdoor entrance, is a very inexpensive cafe. Have a soup, a salad, a main dish (Chicken Kiev, for example) and coffee for under $5. It is called Domashna Kulinariya.

The nearest subway station is the Livoberezhna station. It is a 5-minute (mini bus) ride away from the hotel. There is also a McDonald's at this subway station.
