Apartment blocks in Kiev
Kiev has block after block of 9-story apartment buildings like these.

Tell your agent what size apartment you want, how much you're willing to pay. The agent will set up appointments and visit some apartments with you. Often, you'll meet the agent at a Metro station or some landmark near the apartment and walk there together.

When you find the apartment you want, plan on paying two and a half times the monthly rent right there on the spot (in cash). American dollars are fine, as are Hryvnyas, of course. One half a month's rent is the agents' commission (split between your agent and the agent representing the renter.) The rest is your first and last month's rent. Security deposits don't seem to be routine. And have your passport ready for filling out the lease agreements. The renters will usually want a full year lease, but many will also accept 6 -month leases.
